The pot is already cool — and the cooked beans are still in it “easier till morning”. Easy to leave them under the lid: by breakfast the edge has turned, and the hand takes something that isn’t right. I cool them in a thin layer, tip them into a clean box and put them in the cold — so tomorrow there is a ready piece for a salad or on bread, not a sour pot overnight.
Leftover cooked beans I cool and box into the cold, not in the pot overnight. A tin of beans when there is no soak is another note; leftover rice its own; pasta another story. Here it’s the cooked beans after supper: cooled, shut, in the cold — not in the pot until midday.
In the cold a day or two. Before eating I bring them to steaming hot, not “just warm”. A portion I’ve already reheated I don’t put back “for tomorrow again”. If the smell is sour or the beans are slimy — into the bin, not “one more soup”. I’m not writing a new hummus recipe in this note — it’s about the beans that already cooked yesterday.
I don’t need a pot that quietly turns on the hob. I need a box from which the hand takes beans without shame. At yours do leftover cooked beans reach the cold — or already sit in the pot overnight?
